Abstract
Le quotidien est en général perçu comme une routine, comme une banalité insignifiante. Mais l’étude des gestes, abordés sous l’angle des maladresses et donc de la rupture, en révèle toute la singularité. À partir d’une ethnographie des gestes domestiques des Noirs descendants d’esclaves africains du littoral Pacifique équatorien, cet article a pour objectif de montrer comment la vie quotidienne leur offre une multitude de possibilités d’agir sur la vie et la mort. Les gestes domestiques désignent des gestes ménagers, utilitaires et intimes exécutés de préférence dans l’enceinte de la maison. Leur « efficacité symbolique » tient à leur capacité à maintenir une distance sans cesse renouvelée face à la menace de la mort, signe d’une volonté d’agir et de réagir face à l’incertitude de l’avenir pour mieux faire place à la vie.
