Abstract
À partir d’une étude de cas, envisagée dans une perspective postcoloniale – l’émergence de la domesticité parmi des montagnard(e)s du Haut-Atlas qui s’attachent en ville au Maroc –, cet article revisite la question de l’esclavage domestique moderne en prenant pour objet ses recompositions pendant la colonisation ainsi que les relations postcoloniales qui engagent le travail et les mobilités. Il montre la profondeur sociohistorique des servitudes dans des contextes répressifs marqués par les inégalités entre territoires et entre femmes. En s’appuyant sur des sources écrites, des observations et des entretiens, l’article propose une analyse des servitudes « par le bas » et à partir du point de vue des (anciennes) employées et de leurs proches. Ces personnes se saisissent des rares opportunités connues localement pour avoir des ressources sur un registre moderne, migratoire et salarié – « comme les citadins », disent-elles. Ce registre leur impose la domesticité qu’elles découvrent pendant la colonisation et ne cessent de redéfinir en tenant compte des violences et de nouvelles échappées.
