Abstract
Le Canada multiculturel d’aujourd’hui se présente au monde comme une société d’avant-garde. Ce Canada « progressiste » procède de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1982, non de l’Acte de l’Amérique du Nord britannique, entré en vigueur le 1 er juillet 1867, et dont nous commémorons cette année le 150 e anniversaire. Par ses institutions monarchistes et son fédéralisme centralisé, ce premier Canada se définissait par son ethos conservateur et son hostilité au projet révolutionnaire de la République américaine. Il s’agira, dans ce texte, de situer cette première fondation du Canada dans son contexte international et impérial, de présenter les acteurs et les événements clefs et d’offrir une brève présentation des principales interprétations de 1867 par différentes générations d’historiens.
