Abstract
Le monument est une balise de repérage temporelle et géographique. Lieu de célébration du passé, il joue le rôle de médiateur entre le passé et le présent, comme un espace du souvenir et de la célébration, le monument est une expression d’une volonté. L’île de La Réunion n’échappe pas à cette volonté commémorative, comme partout en France, mais depuis une vingtaine d’années, on constate un désir de la population pour la mise en avant des mémoires locales. En étudiant les outils de commémoration dans l’île, grâce à la méthodologie de l’inventaire général du patrimoine, il se produit un glissement du symbolique au littéral, faisant du monument un objet politique qui construit physiquement une histoire collective.
