Abstract
A welcome addition to a growing body of scholarship on borderlands in North American history, Melinda Marie Jetté’s At the Hearth of the Crossed Races: A French-Indian Community in Nineteenth-Century Oregon, 1812–1859, joins other studies of communities in Canada, the U.S. Southwest, the lower Mississippi Valley, and the Great Lakes region that will allow for greater understanding of demographic changes in regions that experienced multiple waves of colonial migrations, particularly in the nineteenth century. Jetté, a descendant of the French-Indian families of the Oregon community known as French Prairie, situates her work in the context of this other scholarship, particularly of the U.S. West, where U.S. expansion was “a discordant, unsteady process,” often conflict-ridden but featuring “multilayered forms of accommodation and resistance” (5). This new study, she offers, “adds another layer to this story by highlighting the agency of French-Indian westerners responding to the social, political, and economic pressures that accompanied Anglo-American westward expansion and the sectional crisis during the antebellum period” (5). With this book, Jetté also seeks to revise the dominant narrative of early Oregon history, which tends to ignore the history of these multiethnic settlers in favor of the Astorians, the Whitmans (of Whitman Massacre fame), and the Oregon Trail.
