Lorsqu’éclate la Grande Guerre, les réactions de ces Canadiens français établis aux États-Unis firent contraste avec celles des Québécois francophones. Lié par une même langue, chacun des groupes répondit de manière originale au conflit européen. Alors que les Canadiens français du Canada maintinrent en général une position plus pacifiste dans un pays plus belliciste, leurs congénères des États-Unis se révélèrent plus va-t’en-guerre dans un pays plus isolationniste. Pourquoi les réponses aux événements d’outre-mer furent-elles en quelque sorte le miroir inversé l’une de l’autre ? Le présent article entend éclairer cette apparente contradiction.
