Abstract
Cet article présente le culte rendu aujourd’hui dans la ville de Rio aux esprits d’anciens esclaves dans le cadre de l’umbanda : lespretos-velhos(« vieux Noirs »). Fondé sur des éléments récents de terrain, le portrait complexe de ces entités spirituelles met en évidence des aspects moins visibles des reconstructions mémorielles de l’esclavage dans un contexte actuel de redéfinition de ce passé dans la société brésilienne. Pour ce faire, la démarche ethnographique privilégie les caractéristiques attribuées à ces entités par les adeptes, certains éléments de leurs histoires de vie et les expériences vécues des umbandistes avec les « vieux Noirs ». À la fois ancêtres, esclaves et guérisseurs, lespretos-velhossuscitent une diversité de lectures qui met notamment l’accent sur la polysémie du terme d’ancestralité. En outre, leurs rapports avec un saint catholique noir, saint Benedito, révèlent un syncrétisme afro-catholique à l’oeuvre au sein de la pratique rituelle de l’umbanda. Enfin, le texte aboutit en signalant la possibilité, pour les umbandistes, d’une nouvelle visibilité dans la sphère publique de la portée symbolique de l’image de l’esclave noir brésilien.
