Abstract
Cet essai vise à montrer et expliquer comment le cheminement et le positionnement de la Russie sur la scène internationale ont pu aboutir, avec l’annexion de la Crimée et la guerre du Donbass, à une dégradation sans précédent des ses relations avec le monde occidental depuis la fin de la guerre froide. Il montre comment dès 1996, le processus d’élargissement de l’Otan a fait de la multipolarité le premier objectif de sa politique extérieure pour devenir ensuite le principal facteur récurent parmi ceux qui ont conduit à la situation actuelle. Il met aussi en relief et en comparaison les choix faits dans ce contexte par les deux gouvernements du Canada qui se sont succédé depuis la crise. Il montre comment et dans quelle mesure les prises de position et options du gouvernement actuel peuvent être tributaires du passé des relations du Canada avec la Russie.
