Research In Motion (RIM), societe fondee en 1984 au Canada, commercialise depuis 1999 environ sa solution proprietaire de messagerie mobile. Apres des debuts fracassants sur le continent americain, cette technologie inonde le marche europeen, particuliers et entreprises, pour atteindre a la fin 2004 le nombre de 2 millions d'utilisateurs dans le monde. RIM propose une solution dont elle a le controle quasi total de bout en bout de la chaine de messagerie, du serveur passerelle, directement connecte aux systemes de messagerie, au terminal BlackBerry.
