Grâce à une prise de sang, la SAM (Sélection assistée par marqueurs) peut produire une valeur estimée du potentiel de transmission des animaux d’élevage. Elle est depuis peu promue comme une nouvelle façon d’atteindre une élévation moyenne du progrès génétique. C’est cette « troisième révolution » de l’élevage, que nous avons voulu suivre à travers une enquête qualitative dans l’aire d’origine de la race bovine Montbéliarde (les départements du Jura et du Doubs en France). Face à l’introduction des outils génomiques pour la sélection, les personnes que nous avons rencontrées sont toutes partantes et toutes réticentes… La SAM met chacun à l’épreuve, mais chacun tente aussi d’y trouver son propre compte et ces contradictions sont progressivement devenues le fil rouge de notre enquête. Plutôt que les voir comme les preuves d’une argumentation logique chancelante, elles apparaissent comme des marques d’hésitations et de tensions et sont devenues pour nous des indices pour pister les conséquences de l’innovation en train de se faire.
