Abstract
Résumé : Pour les Anciens, le sel est fondamental dans l’alimentation et la conservation des denrées. « Sans sel, par Hercule, on ne peut mener de vie civilisée » nous dit Pline l’Ancien (Pline l’Ancien, Histoire Naturelle 31, 41 (88)). Il n’est ainsi pas étonnant que cette substance, qui fait l’objet de nombreux récits et apophtegmes, entre dans des préparations médicales. Le but de cet article est de comprendre ce que médecins et pharmacologues ont à dire du sel par rapport à la santé, en déterminant la place de cette substance dans les théories sur la médecine et les remèdes. Ainsi, le choix de placer le sel parmi les remèdes issus de la mer ou parmi les minéraux n’est pas indifférent. La place du sel dans le système de « chimie » antique est également révélatrice. Usages médicinaux, croyances et substances apparentées sont aussi des sujets étroitement associés au thème de l’article.
