Abstract
Ancrée dans le contexte tendu du début du xxe siècle, la pensée d’A. Loisy et de F. Cumont sur les religions de l’Empire romain se nourrit des interrogations du présent. Leurs publications et leur correspondance inédite éclairent les conditions d’élaboration de savoirs sur les religions dans la longue durée qui va de l’Antiquité au contemporain. En recourant à un cadre évolutionniste pour penser la naissance et la diffusion des religions, Loisy et Cumont se sont efforcés de sortir d’une histoire de la « révélation ». La prise en compte de la Première Guerre mondiale permet d’analyser la manière dont, dans un monde divisé et inquiet, ils revoient les catégories de leur pensée, ainsi que le scénario d’un progrès linéaire vers l’universalisation et la moralisation dans l’histoire des religions.
