Abstract
Cet article examine les rapports entre monnaie et communauté et, en particulier, en quoi la construction de la communauté se nourrit de la monnaie. Pour élaborer le concept de communauté monétaire, il faut aller au-delà de la notion de communauté de paiement développée par Knapp et adaptée par les institutionnalistes français. On propose de penser la communauté monétaire à partir des finalités. La monnaie devient alors un projet ou un construit téléologique. On illustre ce raisonnement avec les monnaies associatives, qui poursuivent trois finalités : au-delà de finalités socio-économiques territoriales et de finalités monétaires, on met l'accent sur les finalités communautaires, par lesquelles la construction du projet monétaire est un moment de construction communautaire. Dans les monnaies locales associatives, une telle construction communautaire repose sur plusieurs formes de proximité qui engendrent la cohésion nécessaire à la communauté. Elle nécessite aussi la définition des règles d’intégration des professionnels, permettant d’établir une frontière entre la communauté et son extérieur.
