Les révélations d’Edward Snowden sur la surveillance de l’État ont suscité à la fois colère et recherches. Les études sur la surveillance ont été particulièrement mises au défi par trois types de problèmes. Premièrement, la méconnaissance de la recherche : les réponses aux révélations montrent l’incompréhension du dispositif complexe de surveillance ainsi que l’échelle à laquelle il opère. Deuxièmement, le déficit de la recherche : plusieurs domaines essentiels exigent beaucoup plus d’attention, notamment le rôle des conduits physiques, dont les câbles de fibres optiques, dans les rapports de pouvoir, les réseaux mondiaux de professionnels de la sécurité et de l’information, ainsi que les pratiques quotidiennes des médias sociaux. Troisièmement, la direction de la recherche : la surveillance dépend aujourd’hui fortement du numérique et du Big Data. Une question soulevée par les révélations de Snowden est l’avenir d’Internet. L’information et ses conduits sont devenus des arènes politiques sans précédent, centrées sur la surveillance et la vie privée, dont les concepts doivent être repensés.
