Montréal-de-Sos est un éperon calcaire de la montagne pyrénéenne, tout en rudesse, en pentes, rochers et falaises. Depuis l’Âge du Bronze moyen, les dominations sociétales s’y succédèrent, voire s’y emboîtèrent. Ce sommet surplombe un bassin de vie de la haute vallée de l’Ariège, niché au pied de sommets culminants au-delà de 3000 m d’altitude, aujourd’hui crête frontière entre France, Andorre et Catalogne. Le site est connu dans quelques rares actes médiévaux pour avoir été un castrum des comtes de Foix aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles. Treize années de fouilles archéologiques puis, trois années d’études supplémentaires, ont permis de restituer une image des occupations humaines, tant pour leurs aspects architecturaux que pour leurs artefacts. Cet ouvrage présente ces résultats, de l’occupation protohistorique à celle de la fin du XIVe siècle de notre ère, traitant des bâtis, des espaces, des fonctions du site et des objets exhumés. Parmi ces derniers, des découvertes étonnantes ont été réalisées, telles ces centaines de pierres gravées de dessins, plus rarement de textes. L’une d’elles est un fragment inédit d’un poème de troubadour en occitan. Une autre porte la figuration de chevaliers et d’une fortification médiévale… L’ensemble des éléments mis au jour témoigne d’aspects peu connus sur la vie quotidienne des habitants de ce type de castrum montagnard.
