Douleur profonde et intime, le deuil est une réalité individuelle - perte d'un membre de la famille, d'un ami ou d'un collègue - qui a égale­ment un retentissement plus large de par les différents rituels pratiqués par la communauté autour du défunt. Il est déjà difficile d'affronter un deuil ; en contexte migratoire, vivre deuil et immigration, c'est vivre deux processus d'adaptation à des mondes inconnus. Un des buts de ce livre est de comprendre cette terra incognita par le témoi­gnage des immigrants qui ont vécu un deuil, l'expérience des travailleurs sociaux et les études des chercheurs. Il fait œuvre de pionnier en offrant un bilan des connaissances sur le sujet de la mort en contexte migratoire, au Québec, mais également ailleurs dans le monde. Grâce à un travail de terrain au plus près de migrants de diverses origines nationales, culturelles et religieuses vivant au Québec - musulmans, bouddhistes, chrétiens -, il rend compte de la multiplicité d'expériences empreintes tout autant de défis que de solutions créatives. Il propose également d'aider à com­prendre le deuil des autres - ceux qui sont nés ailleurs ou dont les parents sont nés ailleurs - pour mieux les accompagner.
