Abstract
Die neue Ausstellung – und die dazu gehörende Publikation – befasst sich mit einem speziellen Thema in der Geschichte des Völkerkundemuseums, das 1964 seinen Anfang nahm und in den 1980er und 90er Jahren ein Schwerpunkt am Museum war. Damals wurde weltweit in vielen völkerkundlichen Museen debattiert, inwieweit aussereuropäisches Kunstschaffen – «zeitgenössische Kunst im traditionellen oder akademischen Stil» – wahrzunehmen und in die Sammlungs- und Ausstellungstätigkeit der Museen einzubauen sei. Im Völkerkundemuseum wurden in dieser Zeit mehrere Ausstellungen gezeigt, die wir zum Teil übernommen oder selber realisiert haben. Wir zeigen nun in der kleinen Foyersaal-Ausstellung drei kleinere Sammlungen, mit denen wir uns noch nie befasst haben und die auch noch nie ausgestellt worden sind. Es handelt sich dabei um sehr frühe Drucke kanadischer Inuit aus Cape Dorset und Povungnituk vom Beginn der 1960er Jahren, um Drucke von Cree- und Ojibwa-Künstlern der so genannten «Woodland Indian School of Art» aus den 1970er Jahren sowie um Drucke des äthiopischen Künstlers Falaka Armide Yimer von 1970–72.
