He spent nearly a decade living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where he conducted research, ran various educational programs and raised a family. His two major research topics are food security in urban Vietnam and the impacts of oil and gas extraction on communities in North America. He is currently working on an undergraduate reader that teaches core concepts using examples of public anthropology; it is entitled Critical Opinions: Anthropologists Writing for the Public.
