Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract Immigrants can increase international trade by shifting preferences towards the goods of their country of origin and by reducing bilateral transaction costs. Using geographical variation across US states for the period 2008 to 2013, I estimate the respective causal impact of immigrants on US exports and imports. I address endogeneity and reverse causality by exploiting the exogenous allocation of political refugees within the US refugee resettlement program that prevents immigrants from choosing the destination location. I find that a 10% increase in recent immigrants to a US state raises imports from those immigrants’ country of origin by 1.0% and exports by 0.8%.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
