This paper describes an accurate circuit model that accounts for the working principles behind the operation of a recently demonstrated planar resonant blazed grating. The strictly planar grating is a simple array of metal strips printed on a conductor-backed substrate. The circuit model provides an analytical description of the perfect blazing caused by resonance in an infinite grating of this kind. Moreover, the design steps for transferring all the incident power to the n = -1 scattered harmonic, at a desired frequency and incident angle, are discussed. The suitability and accuracy of the proposed model is validated by comparison with full-wave results, obtained with a commercial EM simulator.
