Abstract
De sa création en 1882 à 2001, la frontière Guatemala-Mexique oscille entre deux modèles : celui de frontier, frontière mobile et ouverte, et celui de border, frontière limite, ligne qui divise. C'est une zone où la propriété de la terre, sa gestion et ses conflits déterminent les identifications des populations mayas et non mayas. L'héritage des relations de propriété et de domination entraîne la mobilité volontaire ou le déplacement forcé des habitants. Les différentes crises politiques et sociales chiapanèques du XXe siècle conduisent également ces populations indiennes, exploitées et spoliées, à rechercher et valoriser une nouvelle identité au moyen de cultes religieux spécifiques et de pèlerinages transfrontaliers. L'affirmation d'une identité frontalière montre comment, à travers les pratiques culturelles, les Indiens, mais aussi les métis dépourvus de terre, répondent symboliquement aux décisions politiques dont ils sont victimes. Pour mener cette étude, l'auteur adopte le double point de vue de l'anthropologue et de l'historien : la perspective historique replace la question agraire dans son contexte politique et social et l'approche anthropologique permet de mettre en valeur le vécu symbolique des populations.
