Abstract
Au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle, les chansons populaires à succès de la Tin Pan Alley sont diffusées partout aux États-Unis et au Canada au moyen de la musique en feuilles, du disque, puis de la radio. Ces chansons participent à la création d’un nouveau répertoire, distinct de la Tin Pan Alley, mais rendu possible par l’appropriation de divers éléments stylistiques de celle-ci. En effet, de nombreux « auteurs » canadiens-français, tel Roméo Beaudry, traduisent ou plutôt adaptent en français des centaines de chansons étatsuniennes. Mais que s’est-il passé entre Broadway et Montréal ? Cet article approfondit les notions de « reprise » et de cover de chansons populaires avant et après 1950, en rendant compte, pour les années 1920 plus spécifiquement, de la circulation au Québec des chansons de la Tin Pan Alley et de leurs versions canadiennes-françaises.
