Au lendemain de l’Union de 1840, la population du Bas-Canada était de 650 000 habitants, et celle du Haut-Canada, de 450 000. L’aire seigneuriale de Beauharnois en comptait 12 000 et les cantons environnants de l’intérieur (Dundee, Elgin, Franklin, Godmanchester, Havelock, Hemmingford et Hinchinbrook), approximativement 8 000.
