Abstract
Les écoles confessionnelles continuent de jouir d’une grande popularité en Europe, en dépit du fort déclin de l’appartenance et de la pratique religieuse depuis la fin des années 1960. Cet article examine les raisons de ce succès. Il analyse d’abord quelques évolutions récentes qui ont affecté le public de ces écoles et les enjeux politiques qui les entourent. Il s’intéresse ensuite à un certain nombre de raisons empiriquement vérifiées qui expliquent ce choix des parents. Il examine enfin d’autres raisons de préférer une école confessionnelle et notamment la question de la ségrégation. Selon l’auteur, les minorités culturelles et religieuses se tournent actuellement vers les écoles confessionnelles car elles répondent aux besoins de leurs enfants, lorsque d’autres types d’écoles échouent à le faire, voire excluent purement et simplement ces enfants.
