6,05 millions de dollars canadiens! C’est ce qu’il en coûtera au gouvernement canadien pour avoir cherché à protéger une entreprise de décontamination de BPC d’Alberta contre la compétition de concurrents américains au cours des années 95 à 97. Rappelons les faits : Depuis l’année 1990, le gouvernement canadien permettait l’exportation de BPC en direction des États-Unis. Toutefois, puisque la U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) n’en autorisait elle-même l’importation que lorsqu’il s’agissait de BPC provenant de bases militaires américaines, le transport de ce produit entre le Canada et les États-Unis était, de facto, extrêmement limité. En octobre 1995 toutefois, et à la suite de pressions de cette entreprise, l’EPA donna l’autorisation à la compagnie S.D. Myers d’importer des BPC canadiens afin d’en faire la décontamination à son usine située en Ohio. Dans les jours suivants, c’est au moins neuf autres compagnies qui ont également demandé à l’EPA de se prévaloir du privilège d’importer ce déchet.
