Este ensayo compara dos perspectivas del Nuevo Occidente en la región que los españoles llamaron Nueva España. Después de los dos artículos sobre Hernán Cortés y Bernal Díaz del Castillo –Textos Fundacionales de América V y Textos Fundacionales de América VI- ya publicados por Cuadernos para Investigación de la Literatura Hispánica, con este nuevo estudio se analizan las crónicas de tres misioneros franciscanos –Fray Diego de Landa, Fray Juan de Torquemada y Fray Bernardino de Sahagún- el primero sobre el Yucatán, poblado por los Mayas, y los otros dos sobre lo que se ha ido llamando modernamente Mesoamérica, que hoy comprende varios países, incluyendo a México, Guatemala, Honduras y Belize. La diferencia fundamental entre los primeros dos ensayos y este último se debe al conocimiento de las lenguas de las poblaciones nativas, el quiché de los Mayas, y el náhuatl de los Aztecas, lenguas utilizadas por los tres misioneros estudiados, que se esmeraron en conservar la cultura autóctona de estos pueblos, y dejaron su testimonio de conquistados a quienes los misioneros franciscanos supieron involucrar en la elaboración de recuerdos y acontecimientos de los que los nativos, además de sus impresiones subjetivas, prestaron su labor porque fueron testigos.
