Devant la difficulté de faire vivre une justice de proximité sur un territoire aussi vaste et fragmenté que la Polynésie française, la justice foraine fut instituée localement à la fin du xix e siècle pour permettre la tenue d’audiences en l’absence de tribunal. Cet article s’intéresse à l’audience foraine comme révélateur des multiples et fortes asymétries qui marquent les rapports à l’État et à ses représentants dans des îles situées aux confins de la République française, tant aux plans géographique, ethnique, linguistique que socio‑économique. Il interroge des difficultés qui émergent dans ce contexte et qui contraignent ou même préviennent, jusqu’à un certain point, les échanges en audience, laquelle constitue pourtant un dispositif formel d’interaction directe axé sur l’expression orale.
