Au cours des débats sur la Charte des valeurs de la laïcité, qui ont animé le Québec d’août 2013 à avril 2014, la neutralité de l’État en matière religieuse et les conditions de sa mise en œuvre ont été âprement discutées. Quels sont les enjeux autour desquels se cristallisent les tensions générées par l’application du principe de neutralité ? Que font les États laïques en matière de régulation de la diversité religieuse pour établir des régimes de « reconnaissance » implicite ? Et comment l’interaction entre acteurs religieux et État produit-elle des situations pratiques où ce principe est directement mis à l’épreuve ? Ces questions ne se posent pas uniquement au Québec ; des discussions similaires ont lieu dans d’autres contextes et appellent une mise en perspective de l’idée du Québec comme « société distincte ». Cet ouvrage donne un aperçu de la variété et de la complexité des trajectoires de la neutralité étatique pluraliste avec des études de cas ancrées dans différents espaces nationaux et des analyses issues des sciences sociales, humaines et juridiques.
