Abstract
En dépit des progrès réalisés dans les sociétés occidentales quant à l’égalité entre les hommes et les femmes, il est toujours déconcertant de constater qu’en situation de violence conjugale, même gravissimes, nombreuses sont les femmes qui continuent de cohabiter avec un conjoint violent. Cela suscite d’autant plus de perplexité et d’incompréhension que, bien souvent, cette violence est un secret bien gardé par le couple. Pourquoi une femme persisterait-elle à passer l’éponge sur la violence dont elle est victime, que celle-ci soit physique, sexuelle ou encore faite de menaces et d’intimidation ? Les façons complexes de penser qui sont en jeu chez ces femmes et leurs effets sur leur relation de couple sont décrites ici dans le but de comprendre pourquoi elles semblent se mettre systématiquement à risque de revictimisation bien que, paradoxalement, ce soit justement ce qu’elles cherchent à éviter.
