Ce début de siècle a connu une série d'ébranlements mondiaux, pour n'en nommer que trois : les attentats terroristes du 11 septembre 2001, l'invasion de l'Irak en 2003 et la crise financière de 2008. Dix personnalités reconnues et d'horizons différents se sont penchées sur des enjeux politico-économiques contemporains et ont présenté leurs analyses dans le cadre des conférences du prix Gérard-Parizeau qui se sont échelonnées de 2000 à 2010. Pascal Boniface, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Gérard Noiriel et Alain Touraine examinent les enjeux politiques et sociaux que sont la diplomatie du pétrole, la mutation des rapports Nord-Sud, les flux migratoires sur fond de mondialisation, les perturbations politiques et l’instrumentalisation des religions. Yvan Allaire, Claude Bébéar, Michel Crouhy, Claude Castonguay, Philippe Jorion et Jacques Parizeau, quant à eux, scrutent sous différents angles des enjeux économiques tant québécois qu’internationaux : le renouveau du capitalisme, la progression de la mondialisation, la gestion du risque de crédit, les enjeux du régime de pension, la gestion des risques de la finance internationale et les défis économiques du Québec. Analyser et réfléchir avec son temps, tel a été le défi des grandes conférences publiques du prix Gérard-Parizeau qui sont ici rassemblées. Le fonds Gérard-Parizeau a été créé à la fin des années 1990 par les frères Jacques et Robert Parizeau en l’honneur de leur père, grand homme d’affaires et historien québécois. Ce fonds permet à l’Université de Montréal et aux HEC de recevoir chaque année un conférencier prestigieux et d’offrir un prix à un professeur, un chercheur ou une personnalité qui s’est particulièrement illustré dans les domaines de l’économie et de la finance, et en alternance, dans le champ de l’histoire.
