Abstract
Para a décima sexta Conferência Internacional sobre História da Cartografia, ocorrida em Viena em 1995, Ed Dahl convidou três colegas - Matthew Edney, Christian Jacob, and Catherine Delano Smith – para apresentarem artigos em uma sessão especial sobre o papel da teoria na história da cartografia. Naquela ocasião, ele afirmou que os aspectos teóricos dos trabalhos em história da cartografia seguiam uma “área pouco enfatizada e desenvolvida” (Dahl, Imago Mundi, 1996:185). Os três artigos e cinco comentários foram publicados na Imago Mundi em 1996 e o debate circulou por muitos espaços acadêmicos.
