Abstract
Um aspecto inovador da 16a Conferência Internacional sobre a História da Cartografia, realizada em Viena em Setembro de 1955, foi uma sessão dedicada aos aspectos teóricos da cartografia. A sessão surgiu em decorrência de observações feitas em conferências recentes, que apontavam que o aspecto teórico de nosso trabalho na história da cartografia permanecera como uma área subdesenvolvida e pouco enfatizada. A ideia inicial para essa sessão havia sido discutida com um número de colegas durante e após a conferência de Chicago em 1993.
