Abstract
Cet article examine la représentation de l’Inde dans l’ouvrage Voyage aux Indes orientales età la Chine (1782) de Pierre Sonnerat, explorateur, dessinateur et naturaliste français. De 1774à 1781, l’auteur a eu l’occasion de découvrir différents aspects de la civilisation indiennepour les décrire ensuite avec une précision de scientifique. Notre étude porte sur les moyenslinguistiques et rhétoriques mis en œuvre pour représenter l’Inde, ses mœurs, sa culture et seshabitants, et souligne la forte prégnance textuelle de certains traits spécifiques de laphilosophie des Lumières.
