Abstract

A bi-directional amplifier circuit for fifth-generation (5G) communications systems is presented. The circuit uses two active quasi-circulators, one at the input and another at the output, plus two amplifiers. The amplifiers are identical in design, with one facing in the forward direction and the other the reverse direction. Simulated results show that the forward and reverse gain of the system are both close 20 dB between 28 GHz and 31 GHz. The output 1-dB compression point of the amplifier system is 0.3 dBm at the midband frequency of 29.5 GHz and the input 1-dB compression point is -20.3 dBm. The circuit was designed using Global Foundries' standard 130 nm CMOS technology.
