Abstract
Les travaux de Georg Simmel et des membres de l’École de Chicago, comme Robert E. Park, Ernest Burgess et Louis Wirth, proposent des balises encore pertinentes aujourd’hui pour comprendre la dynamique des rapports interculturels dans l’espace urbain. Cette note de recherche propose une relecture contemporaine de ces auteurs fondamentaux qui ont participé au développement des champs d’études en urbanité et en immigration. Une étude de cas contemporaine, composée de récits de personnes immigrantes d’origine maghrébine à Montréal, permet de valider et d’actualiser la contribution de ces auteurs dans le domaine des relations interculturelles. Les récits, recueillis dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche mené auprès de familles maghrébines à Montréal, portent un regard sur les hauts et les bas de leur établissement au Québec, mettant de l’avant les rapports de proximité et de distance qui marquent leurs interactions au quotidien dans la cité. Ce regard subjectif, matériel privilégié de l’École de Chicago, nous invite à réfléchir au sens accordé à l’étranger dans la cité aujourd’hui.
