Des 11 langues autochtones parlées sur le territoire du Québec il y a à peine quelques siècles, deux ne sont plus parlées (le huron et le malécite), une est en situation très critique (l’abénaquis), trois sont fortement en danger (le mohawk, le micmac et l’algonquin) et les cinq autres, soit l’innu, l’attikamek, le cri, le naskapi et l’inuktitut, bien que relativement mieux préservées, présentent néanmoins d’importants signes d’affaiblissement.
