Cet article tire son origine d’une étude exploratoire menée avec quatre jeunes et adultes autistes francophones de l’Ontario et réalisée par l’entremise d’un blogue collaboratif nommé Voix autistes franco-ontariennes . Leurs discours détonnent parmi la majorité des écrits sur l’autisme largement focalisés sur les enjeux infantiles, révélant ainsi la stigmatisation de leur triple statut identitaire imbriqué : adulte, autiste, francophone vivant en situation linguistique minoritaire. Rarement citées, leurs voix minoritaires se rallient à celles de milliers d’autres rassemblés au sein d’un militantisme naissant qui revendique que l’autisme soit reconnu comme une variation neurologique plutôt qu’une pathologie. Connue sous le nom de la neurodiversité, cette nouvelle vision militante s’inscrit dans une démarche consciente de réappropriation du droit à l’auto-identification autistique agissant telle une voie émancipatrice des inégalités sociales.
