L’abbé Edme Mallet fut l’auteur de plusieurs centaines d’articles de l’ Encyclopédie de Diderot et d’Alembert et le premier théologien à y contribuer. Dans la mesure où l’ Encyclopédie est perçue comme une œuvre anti-religieuse, la participation d’un théologien orthodoxe constitue une sorte d’énigme que l’on a souvent tenté d’expliquer en recourant à des théories conspirationnistes. Reginald McGinnis propose d’inverser l’approche habituelle consistant à faire précéder l’appréciation de Mallet de celle de la religion. La question de la religion dans l’ Encyclopédie ayant presque toujours été interprétée à travers la lentille des controverses qui opposaient Diderot et d’Alembert à des jansénistes et à des jésuites, et la participation de Mallet ayant fini, pour l’essentiel, avant ces controverses, il parait nécessaire à l’auteur de reprendre le dossier depuis le début.
