La peau d’Élisa est le résultat d’une commande adressée à Carole Fréchette par le projet Écrire la ville, organisé conjointement par le Centre des auteurs dramatiques de Montréal et l’Atelier Sainte-Anne de Bruxelles. La conception du projet date de 1995, la création de 1998 au Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui. Il y a certes un choix étonnant à ce que ce projet qui vise à « écrire la ville » prenne la forme du souvenir raconté à haute voix, « avec des petits détails qui donnent des frissons », et que ces souvenirs, qu’on emprunte au besoin (« Vous n’auriez pas, comme ça, tout de suite, un souvenir à me prêter ? »), aient aussi pour fonction de protéger la peau du vieillissement. L’article interroge cette étrange relation entre le corps, la parole et la ville, qui engendre la transformation de l’actrice en conteuse, voire en rhapsode, livrant en ses propres mots les souvenirs des autres, pour ne pas avoir à répondre des siens propres, et à ce que, à travers ces souvenirs, ce soit, somme toute, la ville de Bruxelles qui se trouve redessinée.
