The seismic shothole drillers' log database provides baseline, shallow (10-50 m) lithostratigraphic geoscience information on surficial and bedrock geology, hydrogeology, permafrost geology, and geohazards. The revised version 2 database is a greatly enlarged compilation of 275 871 individual, augered shothole drillers' log records collected from 1954 to present. Originally published as Open File 5465, and containing 76 000 records, the version 2 database has been bolstered by tremendous Industry support, wherein the archival holdings of 16 companies have been made available for inclusion. Compiled in a Microsoft Access database, the shothole data span the length and breadth of the Mackenzie corridor, Mackenzie Delta, and adjoining petroleum exploration regions of the Northwest Territories and northern Yukon. Data extends across parts of NTS areas 85, 95, 96, 97, 106, 107, 116, and 117 (fifty-eight 1:250 000 map areas in total). The database has been designed in a manner that allows it to be easily viewed, sorted, and queried. A simple GIS that geographically displays the location of all individual shothole points is included; each point can be selected in order to see the full litholog record and accompanying metadata. More advanced, thematic GIS based on different data queries, interpretations and mathematical models, have been, or are in the process of being released as companion publications, including: potential granular aggregate resource assessments, drift isopach models, till isopach models, till facies reconstructions, bedrock outcrop and subcrop maps, geohazard identification, muskeg thickness, massive ground ice occurrence and thickness, extent and depth of permafrost, and reconstructions of bottomfast ice extents in the offshore Mackenzie Delta region. Information rendered in these various GIS, stemming from the data provided in this publication, will benefit a wide variety of users (e.g., industry, government, aboriginal groups, communities, land and water boards, regulators, and scientists), and applications (e.g., resource management, land use planning, environmental assessments, infrastructure development, and seismic exploration).
