Abstract
L’importance du hadj et les sommes d’argent considérables qui y sont consacrées sont sources de convoitises. Il n’est dès lors pas surprenant que les États ouest-africains aient souvent été au centre de cette entreprise. À cet égard, le cas du pèlerinage en Côte d’Ivoire est très intéressant. De la création du Comité national pour l’organisation du pèlerinage à La Mecque (cnopm) en avril 1993 jusqu’à la fin de la présidence de Laurent Gbagbo en 2010, en passant par le retentissant échec du « hadj 2006 bis », la gestion du cinquième pilier de l’islam a été à la fois un vecteur de cohésion et de structuration de la communauté musulmane ivoirienne tout en étant la source de profondes rivalités pour des ressources religieuses, économiques et symboliques. Quant à eux, les différents régimes s’étant succédé au cours de cette période, derrière une volonté d’assistance de la communauté musulmane, utilisèrent différentes stratégies pour chercher à s’assurer de la loyauté de certaines élites musulmanes, à affaiblir la cohésion de la communauté, ou encore à réduire l’influence de certains dirigeants et organisations soupçonnés d’être proches de l’opposition au profit d’autres groupes plus près de leurs intérêts.
