Abstract
La Napoli di Bernari, una realtà con le sue irrealtà, non è mai stata quella turistica, pittorica e cartolinesca, ma una “terza Napoli,” non il “paese dell’anima” ma il “luogo delle anime” incapace di concedersi al primo venuto. Questo è ciò che sostiene l’autore nel saggio “Il paese delle anime” in Non gettate via la scala. Da Tre operai in poi Bernari non ha esitato a dissacrare alcuni miti della città partenopea famosa per il sole, il mare, il Vesuvio e i vicoli formicolanti di gente spassosa che canta anche se disoccupata e affamata. I romanzi Speranzella e Vesuvio e pane, le raccolte Bibbia Napoletana e Napoli silenzio e grida, e saggi come “Rapporto su Napoli oggi” testimoniano l’arte di Bernari narratore e storiografo mentre accentuano con acutezza il paradosso del napoletano che come Pulcinella è sempre attore e spettatore, eroe e vittima, paziente e carnefice della sua verità e della sua maschera. La produzione narrativa e saggistica di Bernari, ricca di elementi autobiografici, è dedicata ad una disanima—quando non proprio una critica severa—delle condizioni economiche, sociali ed esistenziali di Napoli e del meridione, che allo stesso tempo riflettono condizioni e contraddizioni simili in ogni parte d’Italia.
