Comme plusieurs romans canadiens du XIX e siècle, C harles Guérin de Pierre-Joseph-Olivier Chauveau est souvent étudié par la critique littéraire pour son aspect didactique: rien d'étonnant à cela quand on sait que les romanciers canadiens du XIX e siècle niaient tout aspect romanesque à leurs récits sous l'influence d'un discours nationaliste et moralisateur exigeant qu'on réhabilite le genre romanesque--jugé immoral et frivole--à des fins de propagande. Même la préface de Charles Guérin se veut claire à ce sujet: c'est moins un «roman» qu'une dissertation politique et philosophique qu'écrit Chauveau en écrivant Charles Guérin . Or, quand on y regarde de près, ce discours de dénégation romanesque demeure ambigu et comporte des failles qui permettent de supposer que Charles Guérin appelle une lecture romanesque. La présente thèse entend le montrer en étudiant le discours ambiant sur la littérature au moment de l'énonciation de Charles Guérin et le discours paratextuel accompagnant ce texte, éléments qui viendront éclairer le discours que tient Charles Guérin lui-même sur la littérature--plus précisément sur le genre romanesque--à travers l'inscription du littéraire par le biais de l'intertextualité et de la reprise de formes littéraires types héritées du genre romanesque.
