Abstract
The CCGS Hudson expedition 2009 - 039 to the Bay of Fundy took place from August 27th to September 7th, 2009. The primary scientific objective of this expedition was to collect geophysical, geological, and biological information in areas where multibeam sonar data had been collected by the Ocean Mapping Group of the University of New Brunswick, the Canadian Hydrographic Service, and the Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic) from the mid-1990s to 2008 (Fig. 1). Specifically, the work supports objectives of the Offshore Renewable Energy project of the Offshore Geoscience Program. Insights gained from this expedition will contribute to our understanding of the Quaternary evolution of the Bay of Fundy and the seabed conditions that may affect the development of marine renewable energy infrastructure. The expedition was conducted with cooperation of scientific staff of the National Marine Fisheries Service of the United States and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. During the expedition, 756 kilometres of seismic profiles and sidescan sonograms were collected, 33 Campod stations were occupied (resulting in 1770 still images and 30.849 kilometres of video camera transects in 16:51:34 hours/minutes/seconds of recording time), 31 IKU samples were retrieved, 4 van Veen grabs were obtained and 3 cores taken at seismostratigraphically strategic locations. At four stations, a deep ocean camera prototype was tested. The general pattern of work on expedition Hudson 2009039 consisted of bottom sampling, sea floor video and photography by day, followed by a night watch collecting geophysical data (seismic profiling and sidescan sonar). Work during daylight took place on the foredeck and in the forward lab. Night work took place on the quarterdeck and the General Purpose lab (Fig. 2). The weather on this expedition was uniformly good and was remarked upon by crew and scientific staff. Hurricane Isobel was initially a concern, but it made landfall well south of the Gulf of Maine.
