Abstract
Les pratiques reproductives des femmes hindoues vivant dans le nord-ouest de l’Inde et la préférence pour les garçons sont analysées avec le concept de performativité de genre développé par Judith Butler. Les femmes rencontrées pour cette étude ont soulevé l’idée que pour être une « femme complète », la naissance d’un fils est nécessaire et permet l’accomplissement de leur féminité et la performance de genre telle qu’elle est conçue dans leur contexte social. La construction identitaire de genre se met en place dès l’enfance par des gestes actés, ritualisés, répétés dans le temps. Ce processus engendre le désir d’une progéniture mâle comme une volonté personnelle s’inscrivant dans les négociations interactionnelles avec l’entourage familial.
