Le hockey est depuis plus d’un siècle une marque de l’identité canadienne. La plus ancienne formation en existence, les Canadiens de Montréal, a fêté son 100e anniversaire en 2009-2010. Les célébrations du centenaire, qui s’échelonnèrent sur trois saisons, ont constitué l’événement symbolique le plus important de la ville de Montréal depuis le 350e anniversaire de sa fondation, en 1992.
