Abstract
La comparaison des sociétés est une activité ordinaire, dont la pratique s’observe bien au-delà de ses usages savants. À partir de l’étude ethnographique d’une mobilisation pour le droit à l’éducation des enfants sans-papiers au Québec, cet article se penche sur des usages militants de la comparaison. Il montre en particulier le rôle crucial que celle-ci a joué dans la construction du problème public de la scolarisation des enfants sans-papiers au Québec. Qu’il s’agisse de sensibiliser des publics, de définir les problèmes, de les donner à voir, d’échafauder des plans d’action ou de monter des argumentaires convaincants, la référence aux expériences étrangères (françaises, américaines et ontariennes notamment) est centrale. Ses usages se heurtent cependant à des enjeux de comparabilité qui ne sont pas sans faire penser à ceux rencontrés par les chercheurs en sciences sociales. Le « comparatisme militant » se trouve ainsi au cœur de processus de diffusion et de circulation des causes et des problèmes publics d’un espace social et national à un autre.
