Abstract
En un contexto internacional de barreras arancelarias reducidas, la politica comercial de la UE ha virado hacia la consecucion de acuerdos comerciales bilaterales que promulgan la reduccion tanto de las barreras no arancelarias como de aquellas barreras regulatorias que limitan el movimiento de bienes, servicios, personas y flujos de inversion, ademas de incorporar disposiciones relativas al medio ambiente, los mercados laborales o los derechos de la propiedad intelectual. Un ejemplo de estos acuerdos de «nueva generacion» es el Acuerdo Economico y Comercial Global —mas conocido como CETA— firmado recientemente entre la UE y Canada, que en la actualidad se encuentra en proceso de ratificacion por los Parlamentos. El articulo describe las caracteristicas generales de los acuerdos comerciales de nueva generacion, las dificultades que plantea su naturaleza regulatoria y su caracter amplio, y como el CETA ha tratado de dar respuesta a algunas de las cuestiones que suscitan mayor controversia en la opinion publica. La relevancia de este acuerdo reside no tanto en el impacto economico que tendra sobre las economias europeas y canadiense, sino en que podria servir de modelo para otros acuerdos con paises desarrollados, incluido el que deben negociar la UE y el Reino Unido.
