Culture, graduate education and the self in Canada and Jamaica: Conflicts between graduate education and traditional role expectations

Abstract
Utilizing a case studies approach, 59 in-depth interviews were conducted to explore the conflict between the pursuit of graduate education and the traditional role expectations for women in two distinct cultures. Examining the experience of graduate students in Jamaica and Canada, the research explores the perceived stresses incurred by female graduate students, while trying to maintain a balance between gender and academic role requirements, looking both at the effect on self-concept and in terms of the effect on a woman’s relationship to others (partner and/or children). Interviewees included both male and female graduate students in order to examine the experiences that are unique and held in common across gender and culture. Initial results of the qualitative study include the preferred view among the female students that the greatest obstacle to success was ‘self’ while male respondents cited external obstacles.
