Cet article se base sur des récits recueillis dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche en histoire orale mené avec des membres de la communauté innue de Nutashkuan, sur la Côte-Nord, et qui portait sur la création de leur réserve par les Affaires indiennes dans les années 1950. Placés au coeur de la trame narrative, ces récits abordent non seulement la construction des premières maisons, mais aussi l’imposition d’un chef pour la communauté et l’introduction d’une dépendance économique via la distribution de rations et le resserrement des activités productives. L’imbrication de ces histoires permet d’entrevoir l’aménagement d’une réserve comme un espace à la fois physique, social, politique et économique. Au-delà de son ancrage dans un lieu bien précis, cet article ouvre la porte à l’histoire plus vaste de l’imposition de la Loi sur les Indiens aux communautés autochtones du Québec, portée par le point de vue des Innus sur leur propre histoire.
